Claus Garbe is University Professor of Dermatology at Eberhard Karls University, Germany, where he is also Head of the Division of Dermato-oncology, Head of the Interdisciplinary Skin Tumour Centre and Head of the German Central Malignant Melanoma Registry.
Professor Garbe began his medical career at the Free University of Berlin. After obtaining his MD in 1983, Professor Garbe was board certified in Dermatology and Venerology in 1987 and was awarded his PhD in 1990, specialising in the biology of melanoma cells. Professor Garbe remained at the Free University until 1995 when he appointed University Professor of Dermatology and Head of the Division of Dermato-oncology at Eberhard Karls University, Tuebingen.
Professor Garbe’s principal research interests include the biology and genetics of melanoma, therapeutic trials in skin diseases, epidemiologic studies, and dermatohistopathology. Professor Garbe has been awarded as the first dermatologist with the German cancer price in 1995. He has been a principal investigator in numerous multicenter clinical trials since 1989 and, as Head of the Interdisciplinary Skin Tumor Center, he currently oversees the treatment and follow-up of more than 12,000 patients with melanoma.
During his career, Professor Garbe has organized 10 international scientific congresses including the world congress of melanoma in 2013 in Hamburg together with Prof. Axel Hauschild, and has been the recipient of many honors. He has authored 581 articles and 17 text books, including 483 original articles, with a cumulative impact factor of 1681.14 (Research Gate, 14.05.2014). He coordinates the development of guidelines on behalf of the German Dermatological Society and German Cancer Society, as well as of European Dermatology Forum and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology. Currently, Professor Garbe is the Vice President of the European Association of Dermatologic Oncology (EADO).
