He is currently heading the Cancer Genetics Unit of the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry at the National Research Council of Sassari, Italy.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1988 at the University of Naples Federico II, he specialized in Oncology in 1991. Since then, he cooperated with national and international outstanding Institutions such as the Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis), the National Cancer Institute Frederick Cancer research and Development Center, Frederick (Maryland), the National Institute for Tumor Research (INT) in Naples, Italy.
In 2005 and 2006 he served as Evaluator and Rapporteur in the "6th Framework Program for Research" of the European Commission for the evaluation of "European projects on cancer research within the "Familiar Cancers Panel" and " Ethical Review panel". Since 2008 he is a member of the Board of Directors IMI (Italian Melanoma Intergroup), of the Board of Directors of SICOG (Southern Italy Cooperative Oncology Group). Again in 2008 he was nominated member of the Working Conference and CME Group of AIOM (Italian Association of Medical Oncology) and elected as member of the Board of the Sardinian Section of AIOM.
Doctor Palmieri is the author of 147 publications on JCR Journals [total Impact factor (2012), 693.87; total citations, 7536; H-index, 30].
He is the Founder and the President of the Association "United against neoplastic diseases" (U.MA.NA), n.g.o. aiming at promoting health education and cancer prevention.
